Many of our instructors refer to Blitz Puff Pastry as their "ace in the hole" because it uses just three pantry ingredients (flour, salt, and butter) and can be used in sweet or savory applications for everything from desserts to appetizers." When you roll the dough, the butter elongates and stays relatively intact through the series of folds, producing layers of fat and dough that puff when baked. "Here, the lamination comes from the larger pieces of fat in the dough. "While traditional puff pastry can be quite time consuming to make, this version - literally translated from German as "lightning" - comes together in under an hour, with half that time spent resting in the refrigerator," the recipe reads. If the cake is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with foil for the last 15 minutes of baking. Lightly and briefly swirl together the batter and filling with a small spatula or knife.īake the cake for 45 minutes, or until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean. Sprinkle the filling evenly over the batter, then top with the remaining batter. Spoon half of the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top. Place the butter, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and vanilla in the bowl of a mixer and beat together on medium speed until well combined.Īdd the eggs, one at a time, beating until thoroughly combined after each addition.Īdd the flour in three portions, alternating with the sour cream and mixing until well combined after each addition. This cake is spectacular baked in a Bundt or tube cake pan, but in a pinch you could bake it in a 9-by-5-inch loaf or a 9̋-inch square baking pan."įor the cake113 grams (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature198 grams (1 cup) granulated sugar2 teaspoons baking powder1/4 teaspoon baking soda1/4 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon vanilla extract2 large eggs240 grams (2 cups) unbleached all-purpose flour300 grams (1 1/3 cups) sour cream, room temperatureįor the filling106 grams (1/2 cup) light brown sugar6 grams (1 tablespoon) cocoa powder2 teaspoons cinnamon19 grams (2 tablespoons) dried currants71 grams (2/3 cup) walnuts or pecans, chopped The baking soda reacts with the acidity of the sour cream to leaven the cake, but we also add baking powder to help lift the butter and streusel. The cake itself is rich with sour cream and vanilla, and the streusel adds both flavor and texture to make this a classic example of the genre. We cream the butter just to combine it with the sugar and the eggs rather than creaming to aerate as cake recipes often do, and the result is a somewhat denser crumb. This example is the perfect bridge to the world of cakes. "We love coffeecakes, both yeasted and chemically leavened.

Once you’ve grown accustomed to pinch-zooming, the level of accuracy provided by tap-zooming alone simply doesn’t cut it. What really sealed the deal, however, was multi-touch in the browser. Oddly, it renders pages more accurately when they’re being viewed in landscape mode than in portrait mode. It tends to render pages pixel perfect (as implied by the Acid3 test results), while the Droid would occasionally fall short. With that said, I still prefer the iPhone browser. That said, we’re not robots – standards schmandards, we like what we like. Thus, if we’re going purely by measurable standards here, the iPhone browser wins. On the popular web-standards test known as Acid3, the iPhone scores a 100/100 while the Droid caps out at 93/100. To rank it amongst some of the more well known keyboarded handsets of the past few years: the Droid keyboard is better than that of the G1, Helio Ocean, and the BlackBerry Curve, but not nearly as good as anything from the Danger Sidekick line, the BlackBerry Tour, or the HTC Touch Pro 2. The buttons are practically flush with each other, and it’s quite easy to jam down on two buttons at once. That’s not to say the Droid keyboard is all that great – nor is it terrible. The Droid has one, and the iPhone doesn’t – so it wins this one by default. Every smartphone I had prior to an iPhone had a physical keyboard, and I still prefer a physical keyboard after two years. That said.įor many, a physical keyboard is a must-have. It just does a better job at guessing what I’m trying to type as I poke my way around a sea of glass. The Winner: iPhone, by a very slim margin. That said, the iPhone’s autocorrect seems a bit better at properly attending to my typos, primarily on shorter words that have more potential alternatives. That’s impressive for Android’s sake, considering that I’ve spent considerably more time on the iPhone keyboard. It has gotten better since, however – on the stock build of Android 2.0 I’ve got running on this Droid, I’m able to blast about at nearly the same rate as I can on my iPhone. In preparation for the onslaught of candybar Touchscreens that were sure to follow after the success of the iPhone, Android earned on-screen keyboard support shortly after the launch of the G1. Both are drop dead gorgeous, and the only flaws of each are downright trivial. The iPhone then loses its ground for the fact that the glossy back casing is damned near impossible to keep clean and free of fingerprints. In the Droid’s case, the gold details on the camera button, 5-way D-Pad, and rear casing lose it some points for looking like something straight out of a bad 70’s bachelor pad. If we were to consider the overall designs par-for-par, all we’d have left to nitpick is the details. Same deal here the iPhone is engulfed in glistening curves that give it a softer, friendlier look, while the Droid is wrapped in tight, clean angles that make it a shining example of great industrial design. It’d be like having a heated argument over whether Angelina Jolie was more or less gorgeous than Halle Berry. This Droid unit was provided by Motorola for review.Ĭomparing the aesthetics of the iPhone and the Droid is. I also regularly use a Palm Pre, Nokia N97, BlackBerry Tour, T-Mobile G1, and an HTC Touch2 to ensure a general knowledge of all the major platforms. Going into this review, I had used an iPhone (which, for disclosures sake, I pay for in full) as my primary device for around 2 years. Thus, my only option is to be as transparent as possible. I’ve been using the Droid as my primary phone for a few days now, and I think I’m finally ready to answer them.īeing that I’m only human, it is absolutely impossible for me to be 100% objective when comparing two phones. They always had two questions: the first would be something like “What do you think of the Droid?”, followed by “Would you recommend it over the iPhone?” Same questions, each. It would prepare your breakfast promptly each morning, tuck you in at night, and, maybe - just maybe - knock the iPhone down a notch or two.īeginning about a week before its launch (largely due to Verizon’s incredibly intense marketing campaign) I began getting calls and tweets from friends and colleagues asking about the Droid. If hype were to be believed, the Motorola DROID is the pièce de résistance of the mobile world the conclusive creation sent down by the Great Smartphone in the sky to rid us of our woes. Most of the significantly more powerful weapons are much easier to use than these two, but the flip side is that they're generally available only in very limited numbers and, in most gameplay modes, must be collected from crates that are airdropped onto the battlefield.įires are now persistent for a time, and affected by the wind. Bazookas, on the other hand, are challenging because their trajectories are affected by the wind, which changes direction and/or speed every turn. Grenades can be tricky because not only do you have to get the strength and trajectory of your throw right, but you also need to set the fuses on them for one to five seconds. The only weapons that you have an infinite supply of are grenades and bazookas, which aren't particularly powerful and require some skill to use effectively. Despite some notable omissions, though, Worms Reloaded features one of the best and most well-rounded arsenals to appear in the series to date. If you're a Worms veteran, you'll likely find that much of the Reloaded arsenal is familiar, and you might lament the lack of favorite weapons from previous games, such as the old woman, the mad cow, the skunk, and the mole squadron. The controls for both movement and weapon use could hardly be simpler, and a thorough "How to Play" option offers text descriptions of practically every aspect of the game, including the uses of individual weapons and gadgets. There are almost 50 weapons and gadgets in the Worms Reloaded arsenal, and while that number might seem daunting if you're a newcomer to the series, there's really nothing complicated at all about their use. You control only one worm at a time, and typically each timed turn involves moving said combatant into a good position from which to launch an attack and then retreating to a position of relative safety to make the enemy's inevitable retaliation difficult. Teams of up to four worms are still dropped into randomly generated, completely destructible 2D environments battles are still turn-based and the victor is still whichever team has the last worm standing. Outside of some huge and occasionally humorous developments in weapon technology, worm warfare hasn't changed a whole lot over the years. Fluff-wise they're still the majority species on the planet and are in effective control of most of the political (and economical) climate, human-run or -majority countries being far more common than the alternatives. Playing a human also requires no priority or karma investment at character creation, freeing up points better spent elsewhere. Humans Are Average: Human stats (with the exception of Edge) are ranked from 1-6, this being the "baseline" for stats and making them competent at everything, but excellent at nothing.Born Lucky: Human characters start with an additional point of Edge in most editions of the game.Sixth Edition has taken some steps to mitigate this with establishing independent populations of Nartaki emerging in the Arabian Caliphate & the Amazon basin while they still have the issue of distinctive appearance making them highly recognizable, they lack the baggage of the status afforded to the Indian population. As such, a nartaki shadowrunner - especially one operating outside of India - would be relatively easy to track down. But their extra arms and unusual skin colors make them very distinctive, and there are less than ten thousand of them in the world, and the vast majority live in India, where most of them are documented and registered. Awesome, but Impractical: Nartaki suffer from this they've got all the advantages of humans, plus an extra set of arms.Amazing Technicolor Population: The first acknowledged human metavariant, the Indian nartaki, come in red, blue, or gold skin colors.Humans have two metavariants as of Sixth Edition, the Nartaki & the Valkyrie/Garudan. Despite the appearance of a lot of subraces, many of the dividing lines of "baseline" humanity (skin color, social class and nationality) are as powerful as they've always been, and in many cases also override any racial animus towards other metahumans. They still make up the majority of the Earth's population and are majority demographics in most of the mainline nations in the fluff (with some, like Japan, being almost rabidly pro-human). Humans ( Homo sapiens sapiens)Humans in Shadowrun need little introduction, being much the same as they've always been. Standard Fantasy Races: The metahuman breeds formed from humanity with the return of magic are, besides humanity itself, classic fantasy dwarfs (short and stout, and good with technology), elves (long-lived, magical and reclusive, and often disdainful of other metahumans), and orks and trolls usually scorned and discriminated against by others, forcing them onto the fringes of society, but who tend to get along well with each other as a result. You can do practically anything within the scope of the game mechanics. In practice, though, there's literally nothing stopping you from acquiring stats, skills, money, or more magical ability. It should be noted, though, that for game balance purposes, picking a race with cool stat bonuses means you have to give up stats, skills, money, and/or magical ability. Square Race, Round Class: In Shadowrun, characters are not bound to any specific archetype due to their race. Also, SURGE (Sudden Recessive Genetic Expression) in 2061 brought changelings, which aren't exactly a specific sub-species, but more of a collection of odd mutations. The Magic Comes Back: Metahumans appeared in two waves: The "Unexplained Genetic Expression" (UGE) births of 2011, where babies were born as elves and dwarfs, and the "Goblinization" of 2021, where adult humans, elves and dwarfs morphed into trolls and orks overnight. There are some changelings who present as combining features of one metatype on another(an elf with ork tusks, a dwarf with troll horns, that kind of thing) but this isn't a result of crossbreeding, rather random metagenetic expression. Meaning no halvsies, and an elf could be the biological sibling of a troll, and half-sibling to a human. If one metahuman procreates with another of a different metatype, the children would be one of their parents' metatypes. Half-Human Hybrid: Thoroughly averted. The latter four races are commonly referred to as "metahumans" and first appeared in the 2011 "Unexplained Genetic Expression" shortly before the return of magic to the world. Characters can be one of five races: human, elf, dwarf, ork, or troll note Later editions add additional, non meta-human races, but these are the stand ones you'll find in each edition's core rulebook. The girl was taken to a place called the Witch’s Castle, a creepy old abandoned stone house by the Ohio river where local kids would often go to party. The young girl began screaming, sobbing, begging her captors to let her go Shanda had sworn that she’d never speak to Amanda again, but it was too late. As soon as they began to drive away, Melinda popped up from the backseat and held a blade to Shanda’s throat. Melinda had been hiding in the back seat under a blanket, and just a moment after Shanda got in the car she must’ve realized she was doomed. The girls assured the preteen that Amanda was waiting for her, if she’d just get in the vehicle they’d take Shanda to see her. Amanda could have at least warned Shanda, but instead she chose to do absolutely nothing.Īfter the concert, the group of 4 drove back to Shanda’s house Amanda was supposed to be outside waiting to talk to her, but she was nowhere in sight. Melinda called her girlfriend, Amanda, and told her of her sinister plan for Shanda Amanda was supposed to have cared for Shanda, she could’ve stopped everything right then. The naive preteen told the girls to come back around midnight, that she’d sneak out once her dad was asleep.įrom here the group of girls actually went to their planned concert, and they reportedly had a grand old time. Toni and Hope told Shanda that Amanda, her love interest, needed to see her that night they stated that it was an emergency. When the group of girls drove up to the house, Toni and Hope knocked on the front door the girl’s Daddy answered and called Shanda over. On this particular weekend Shanda had been staying with her father, Steve Sharer, and Melinda knew it. Pretty much, they‘d been a group of strangers who came together in order to murder an innocent 12 year old stranger. It should be noted that Hope and Toni had never met Melinda before this night, they had been friends of Laurie’s matter of fact, the only one of these girls who had ever met Shanda in person was Melinda. But the concert wasn’t Melinda’s main concern, she’d planned to kill her young rival as well. On January 10th of 1992, Melinda had planned to attend a concert with 3 other girls: 17 year old Laurie Tackett, 15 year old Toni Lawrence, and Hope Rippey, also 15. Melinda was extremely jealous, obsessively so she had threatened Shanda’s life many times, and told just about everyone how badly she wanted the lovely child dead. The relationship hadn’t been perfect, and Amanda had been talking to a beautiful 12 year old girl named Shanda Sharer on the side for about 3 months. 16 year old Melinda Loveless had been dating a girl named Amanda Heavrin. All Cavemen Were Neanderthals: The Neanderthals were going to be added as a playable culture.

Greenthumb Gardens area (Past, 2nd visit) Their plethora of resistances and metal slime stats can make them worth the effort, though they are not nearly as versatile as liquid metal slimes. The remakes allow for the recruiting of metal slimes, though the chances of one wanting to join the party are abysmally low, combining with their rarity and difficulty in defeating to make them one of the hardest monsters to recruit in the game. Due to the fact that true spell immunity does not exist in the original NES version of I, Sizz and Sizzle have a higher chance (1/16) to slay the slimes than critical hits (1/64). The player may start dealing normal damage to metal slimes as they near the level 30 cap. Metal slimes make their first appearance as the greatest source of experience from any monster. Metal monster weapons (such as those found in the Joker games) have a good chance at connecting with a metal slime, and the poison needle, with its 12.5%( 1⁄ 8) chance to kill instantly if it connects, or even Hela's hammer's 37.5%( 3⁄ 8), are particularly effective as human weapons go. Nearly all forms of spell and skill are completely ineffective against metal slimes. Even if the player gets lucky and a metal slime or two decide to stick around for a turn, nearly all normal attacks will either miss or do a measly 1 point of damage, though their low HP means every hit counts. This comes at a catch, however: metal slimes rarely appear, and when they do, they usually run in an instant, often without a scratch due to a very high speed stat. Metal slimes are infamous monsters in the series, and for a good reason: they have one of the highest experience point payouts of any enemy in the series, exceeded only by far stronger monsters and other metal monsters even some bosses pay out less than a single metal slime does. 2.6.1 Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road VictoryĪs far as appearances go, the metal slime is nearly identical to a normal slime, with its only notable differences being its gray coloring and metallic lustre.2.2.11 Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light.2.2.10 Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional.2.2.8 Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key.2.2.7 Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D. 2.2.6 Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional.2.2.3 Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart. The aim of this document is to show how to use a "Deadlock Graph" produced by and ORA-00060 error to identify the base problem. This article presents examples of each type so that investigation and resolution can continue along the right track. While this is a good point for one of the sessions, this is not for the other. By examination of numerous Service Requests, we have seen that the most common types of deadlock can be identified by a "signature" deadlock graph that can be used to identify the "type" of deadlock being encountered. Fortunately, the SQL Server database engine comes with a deadlock monitor thread that will periodically check for deadlock situations, choose one of the processes implied as a victim for termination. When such a deadlock is detected a trace file is produced containing a "Deadlock Graph" (along with other useful information). If you repeat the last (cancelled) operation in the session, then you will get the deadlock again. The session that detected the deadlock is still 'alive' and the rest of the transaction is still active. When Oracle detects a deadlock, the current SQL in the session detecting the deadlock is cancelled and 'statement-level rollback' is performed so as to free up resources and not block all activity.
